The union was the work of Scandinavian aristocracy wishing to counter the influence of the Hanseatic League and, more personally, of Queen Margaret I of Denmark (1353–1412). The Kalmar Union was the personal union of the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden during the 15th century.
