And the cast are on top form- Sidney James has a ball as an unlikely hippy, Kenneth Williams is delightful as pretty much always, Barbara Windsor brightens up the screen with her presence, Charles Hawtrey is hilarious and Peter Butterworth has possibly his finest hour as the miserly site owner. A group of holidaymakers head for the Spanish resort of Elsbels for a 4-day visit. This film should be viewed at least once by everyone, even if only for the legendary sequence of Barbara Windsor doing exercises! When they get there, they find the Hotel still hasn't been finished being built, and the weather is awful.... Of all the 'Carry On' pictures, 'Camping' seems to be the one most frequently shown on television, and with good reason.

Fearfully I can envisage the day when the "Post - Modern - Ironic" brigade decide that Sid James is the new Jacques Tati,i.e. The boys guffaw, their girlfriends are appalled. As temperatures soar it tempts many of us to dust off the camping equipment and hit the open road, just like the Carry On cast in their 1969 outing Sid (Sidney James) and Bernie (Bernard Bresslaw) are planning to take their girlfriends Joan (Joan Sim) and Anthea (Dilys Laye) to a nudist camp, having been inspired by a film they see while on a date at the cinema.

The fact that the film was shot on the back lot of Pinewood Studios, and not in a campsite in Devon, is really not important, as the atmosphere is captured marvellously.
