Portra is a lovely film, but in my mind it just lacks a bit of character…a bit like driving a new car which has all the features and is quiet, versus an old one that’s loud and rattles but has that little bit of charm. If you were to look at the outdated box design, the budget price, the ubiquitous availability and the results it gives, it would be easy to conclude that Fujicolor C200 – or Fujicolor 200 as it’s known in some markets – is nothing special.If the positivity makes you want to grab some Fujicolor C200 / 200 for yourself, you’re not going to find it hard to track down. In some territories, it may be available as plain old Fujicolor 200, without the C.It used to be available in both 24 and 36 exposure rolls, although the former was discontinued a few years ago. Not so vivid as the Superia line, and it always rendered slightly warm green tones. I used to think C200 was OK until I shot some canola fields and there was just no way I could get the yellows to look any good. The colors look cool and clean on a MacBook Pro Retina display, maybe the Noritsu HS-1800 also has something to … Along with Fujicolor C200 the other option is the Fujicolor X-TRA 400, a similar film in the ISO400 range. As you can see the Fuji C200 is an excellent film. Fuji C200 is a film which oozes character. But, in my opinion, it’s a pretty good budget film for when you’re just out there preserving memories.One main difference between Fuji’s films and Kodak’s is their colour reproduction. Those more-subdued-than-Kodak hues mean your scenes and skin tones remain realistic, and the low grain and sharpness help keep them clean.Finally, that aforementioned wide exposure latitude is a good safety net should the light really be too bright or dim, and the film has good enough dynamic range to render light and dark areas well in the same shot, as you can see with the fish market and pigs shots below.Fujicolor C200 is a 5500°k daylight balanced, consumer-grade ISO 200 colour negative film that’s available in 35mm format only. I’ve noticed that it has significantly finer grain than Kodak Gold 200, which is a benefit when you are shooting half-frame negatives. Here are some recent shots in 35mm.Thanks for the tip! Not as warm as Shooting at box speed gives you very natural and pleasant blue tones, really wide tonality and surprisingly this film is quite forgiving in the highlights considering its price.Reds are more muted than other Fujifilm films, films like Same as blue tones, yellow tones are natural, balanced and true to color.In addition, I tested this film in some portraits, with some friends withd ifferent skin tones under natural light and direct flash, to see how this film reacts to different situations. And the red in the dress of the couple shot – can’t help but think “Damn that would have been nicer in Portra” So there you go! The Fujicolor C200 is a color negative film produced by Fujifilm. I was genuinely pleased with the results.So, what is Fujicolor C200? It does have a bit of grain in the darker areas, but I like that. I scan my negatives on a Noritsu LS600, and I generally only adjust the exposure and very occasionally the contrast – I don’t make any direct adjustments to colours/saturation but obviously if the contrast is dialled up or down there’ll be a flow on affect. With a good scanner and a few minutes of editing you can get amazing results with it. But if you’ve ever shot the C-less It’s different stuff to the plain old Fuji Superia 200 and Superia X-TRA 400 that can look similar at first glance Aliases aside, C200 is Fujifilm’s budget mass-market colour film offering, occupying the same space as Kodak’s C200 is the kind of film you can pick multiple rolls up for the same price as one of something more boutique and take them on holiday or somewhere else where reliability and quantity are more important than exquisite quality.I shot mine on a couple of trips I took, as you’ll see from the sample photographs later, and found it did a more than serviceable job.
