In 1840 they abandoned the sectional approach to nominate the military hero Clay, the nominee in 1844, lost the election when he misgauged the popularity of expansionism and opposed the annexation of Again turning to a former general, the Whigs in 1852 nominated Gen. By 1854 most northern Whigs had joined the newly formed Republican Party.
