Counselling services, such as drug and alcohol support groups, will also be able to “provide essential services”.And sports coaches will be able to meet with groups of more than four households in a day.The First Minister said that from August 17 a wider range of dental care can resume, including that which involves aerosol.Sturgeon said the prevalence of coronavirus was now at “very low levels” – adding it was estimated that last week just 300 people were infectious. The R number – the average number of other people infected by each person with Covid-19 – remains below one.But despite this “substantial” progress, the First Minister said the virus was still circulating. As a result, she confirmed Scotland could not yet move into the fourth and final phase of easing lockdown restrictions.Sturgeon said: “A move to phase four would require us to be satisfied that the virus is no longer considered a significant threat to public health. No confirmed coronavirus patients have died in Scotland for the past fortnight, it was announced.A total of 2491 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, no change since July 16.The First Minister said 18,597 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 17 the day before.Classes to resume nearly five months after pupils were sent home amid the coronavirus lockdown.Pupils were sent home in March as the country locked down in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus. In a widely expected announcement on Thursday, the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said it was now safe for children to return to class from August 11.Schools can begin with a phased return but all pupils should be in full-time by August 18.Social distancing will not be enforced between pupils, but secondary schools will be expected to make changes to keep older students apart.Teachers must remain two metres from pupils when possible, but will not be routinely expected to wear face masks.Sturgeon said: “It is a moral and educational imperative that we get children back to school as soon as is safely possible.“In fact, a key reason for our cautious approach to lockdown over the last two months and over the next few weeks, is a determination to drive the virus down and keep prevalence low, so that schools can reopen in August.“I am therefore pleased to confirm today that schools will return from August 11.“Given how long children have been out of school, some local authorities may opt for a phased return over the first few days.“But we expect all pupils to be at school full-time from August 18 at the latest.”At the height of the pandemic, the Scottish Government proposed schools initially returning part-time, with pupils splitting their time between class and home. But continued suppression of the virus means a full-time return is now possible. “We’ll take very, very small baby steps just to make sure that we’re being as safe as possible, because safety is paramount for the staff and the children.”Coronavirus surveillance testing planned for schoolsCouncils ‘confident’ that schools can return full-timeFirst Minister Nicola Sturgeon will update MSPs on schools as well as any further changes to lockdown.Coronavirus death toll in Scotland rises above 4200Coronavirus surveillance testing planned for schoolsFirst Minister Nicola Sturgeon will update parliament on the issue just after midday on Thursday. She is expected to give the green light for a full-time return of pupils to schools when the new term starts from August 11.Education secretary John Swinney said earlier this week people “should be confident” that will be the case, while Sturgeon strongly hinted it at Wednesday’s Covid-19 briefing. The First Minister said she did not want to pre-empt the announcement to MSPs on Thursday. But she added: “You know where we’re trying to get to on schools and you’ve probably not heard anything from me today that suggests we’re going in the opposite direction.”Other issues related to the reopening of schools, such as if face coverings will be required, and whether or not secondary pupils will need to socially distance, should also be addressed.Sturgeon will further update parliament on the Scottish Government’s latest review of lockdown on Thursday, which happens every three weeks. The FM has stressed she will likely take a “very cautious” approach to easing measures any further after indoor hospitality, shops and personal retail were given the go-ahead to resume in the phase three announcement earlier in July.Along with the decision on schools, the only major change expected is an end to shielding for groups deemed most vulnerable to Covid, such as those with underlying health conditions.Speaking on Wednesday, Sturgeon said those two areas – schools and shielding – would not “leave us very much room for immediate changes” elsewhere. It means businesses such as gyms, nightclubs, casinos and live event venues are likely to see their wait to reopen go on.The First Minister said: “We can’t just look at whether an individual change is safe, although that’s an important part of our consideration.“We also have to consider the cumulative impact of all of the changes we make and we have to be sensible in the order in which we make changes so we don’t create a situation where we are doing too much, too quickly and therefore giving the virus the chance to overwhelm us again.”She said she expects some people and companies to be disappointed after tomorrow’s announcement.Sturgeon added: “Where we are unable to move to a further opening up tomorrow, we will indicate, as far as we can, indicative dates for the future – even though they will be conditional on continued suppression of the virus.”Coronavirus death toll in Scotland rises Inverclyde as being linked to the cases,” it said.An NHSGGC-led Incident Management Team is now working with the Scottish Government, Health Protection Scotland (HPS) and local environmental health
