He studied at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) during high school and, in 1982, was invited to play with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra before Wynton Marsalis recommended Blanchard as his replacement in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in New York City.
