It's not a large cemetery but it's well kept, full of history, and thought provoking.Two poignant stories that emerge from a visit to Franklin, Tennessee, site of one of the bloodiest but least remembered battles of the Civil War, are about Carrie McGavock, mistress of the Carnton plantation who donated food, clothing and supplies to care for the wounded and dying as her home was used as a field hospital, and the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, a two-acre plot of land that was donated by the McGavock family to be designated for the Confederate dead to be buried.
2 years later when the family realized the wooden markers were rotting away they donated 2 acres of their land to have the bodies moved to their final resting place. They were first buried at the battleground, but were reinterred in 1866.
By 1840 Gainesville had become the third largest town in the state of Alabama, with a population of over 4,000. When confederates died on the battlefield at the Battle of Franklin, they were buried and a wooden marker was put on the graves where they had fallen.
