I purchased this book to gain a more detailed insight into the person, life, politics and career of Franklin D. Roosevelt former President of the United States of America. Doing so successfully requires incorporating his patrician background and upbringing, his marriage to one of the most remarkable women in American history, his early career in state and national politics, his affliction and adaptation to polio, his successful ascent to the presidency, and his management of two of the greatest challenges the United States and the world has ever faced.

Personally I would have liked more material that directly relayed a spectrum of other people's first person impressions of being around FDR and dealing with him - of his character, moods, presence and emotional & social IQ - but you can't ever have everything and the book reads better than most novels. Some promotions may be combined; others are not eligible to be combined with other offers. " Hyperbole? Not only malnutrition, unemployment but worst of all hopelessness and despair gripped the country.

Though the fruits of his legacy certainly warrant reconsideration, the relative neglect into which he has fallen is an injustice. (My only regret is that the book wasn't longer!) For me FDR's life was about as well and productively lived as they come even given the blessings that were his birthright - and this book similarly succeeds. The first and most famous occurred in 1937, when his anger over unfavorable Supreme Court decisions on New Deal programs led him to try to "pack" the court with additional judges who would be in his pocket; the defeat he suffered was humiliating, and he did not really recover from it until late in his second term. Also, oddly the Dust Bowl of the mid-1930s is mentioned only obliquely, but never by name nor how serious it really was nor FDR's response to it. Through this biography I found FDR to be a fascinating, inspiring figure. Smith began his teaching career at Dartmouth, leaving in 1965 for the University of Toronto, which offered him tenure. Does this book contain inappropriate content? The man who feared little, pulled America out of its doldrums, and faced enemies on all fronts, FDR ought not be left remembered in the history books solely as the man of the Sunday night radio broadcast or he who was confined to a wheelchair.

It is also surprisingly detailed about his relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt, the first three conventions and elections of FDR's presidency, his New Deal policies, and more. Roosevelt chose to end the affair rather than his marriage, but he remained surreptitiously in touch with Lucy for the rest of his life (she was with him in Warm Springs on the day of his death), and he almost certainly was closer to her than to anyone else. Smith sees Roosevelt as, with Washington and Lincoln, in the top echelon of influential American presidents and her book is intended to show why.

That being one made up of religious conservatives with socially conscious progressive ideals in foreign relations, taxation, and the role to be played by government with industry/government "co-operation" (regulation). This book has been called the best one-volume bio of FDR and, even though this is the only bio of FDR that I've read, I can see how this could be true. The book could have been equal to his about Eisenhower, but one final chapter is missing : nothing about the funeral, the transfer of power to Pdt Truman, and some remarks or commentaries by people who were close to FDR, even some of his adversaries...
