It is located downtown on Brant Street, near Adelaide St. ALPHA is Toronto’s original democratic school (oldest elementary alternative public school in Toronto, operating since 1972), and is part of a growing number of similar schools worldwide. ALPHA Alternative School, one of the oldest alternative schools in Canada, celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012.ALPHA—A Lot of Parents Hoping for an Alternative—was unique in the Toronto public school system when it was founded in 1972. ALPHA stands for "A lot of people hoping for an alternative." ALPHA is a democracy based on consensus. ALPHA has approximately 80 students who come from all across the city. ALPHA shares the building with OASIS Secondary Alternative School and the Brant Street Day Care. ALPHA is located in the old Brant Street Public School building, on Brant Street, in the heart of the Fashion District. We respect children’s desire to become competent and participate in the greater world. ALPHA is notable for the following reasons: It is Toronto's oldest public alternative school; It is the only school based on the Ontario government's landmark Hall-Dennis Report; It is extremely rare to have a public school that has no grades, tests or homework The goal is not compromise but refinement of a proposal until everyone can live with the decision. Since 1972, The ALPHA Community has explored a wide variety of unique approaches to supporting our children's development as they “acquire the knowledge, skills, and values they need to become responsible members of a democratic society”ALPHA belongs firmly to the long tradition of learner-centered education that sees a child’s curiosity as the primary driver for knowledge acquisition.
